(English below) Hai in mente delle domande che vorresti porre a uno scienziato o ricercatore? Questa è l’occasione giusta per avere delle risposte! Tre università europee si sfideranno in una goliardica gara scientifica per risolvere domande enigmatiche. Inviaci le tue domande e vieni a scoprire le risposte alla prima EC2U Science Battle, il 24 settembre 2021 a Pavia.
La Science Battle è un evento nato per intrattenere il pubblico mostrando in modo concreto come i ricercatori affrontano un problema e per dimostrarne il processo. Il gioco è stato creato nel 2016 dall’Università di Turku, in Finlandia, e ora si espanderà come una sfida all’interno dell’European Campuses of City Universities (EC2U) alliance.
Il primo turno, si svolgerà durante la Notte dei ricercatori, a Pavia, e la battaglia sarà tra le Università di Pavia (Italia), Poitiers (Francia) e Turku (Finlandia). Seguirà il prossimo anno il secondo round, tra le Università di Coimbra (Portogallo), Iasi (Romania), Jena (Germania) e Salamanca (Spagna). I vincitori si daranno poi battaglia per la fase finale, nel 2023.
La prima Science Battle di EC2U vedrà in sfida tre team di ricercatori di sei membri ciascuno. Le squadre saranno “rinchiuse” in un cubo di vetro per tre ore per risolvere le domande presentate dal pubblico. Ogni sede di gara avrà un host. Ci saranno anche giudici, che assegneranno arbitrariamente punti alle squadre per arguzia, intrattenimento, ragionamento, finalità, e il pubblico potrà dare punti aggiuntivi in base alle proprie preferenze.
Le domande ai ricercatori saranno formulate in base ai suggerimenti ricevuti dal pubblico. Il pubblico potrà seguire dall’esterno o online il lavoro dei ricercatori e potrà anche aiutare i team e porre alteriori domande.
I team di ricerca saranno multidisciplinari e le domande possono essere su qualsiasi tema. Nelle precedenti Science Battles, ai ricercatori è stato chiesto, tra le altre cose: perché le stelle e altri corpi celesti come la terra siano quasi rotondi; se sia eticamente meglio mangiare insetti o carne; perché i tubi dell’acqua si congelano più facilmente quando il gelo si attenua; perché l’uomo è così egoista; quanti palloncini sono necessari per sollevare in aria una persona di 80 kg.

Do you have in mind a question you would like to ask researchers? Now is the time for it!
Three European universities will compete in a playful Science Battle to solve puzzling questions. Send us your questions and come follow the search for answers at the first EC2U Science Battle on September 24th in Pavia.
Science Battle is a game-like event to show the public in a concrete way how researchers tackle a new question and to demonstrate the process of it. The game was created in 2016 by the University of Turku, Finland, and now it will expand as a battle between the European Campuses of City Universities (EC2U) alliance.
On the first round, on Researchers’ Night 2021, the battle will be between the Universities of Pavia (Italy), Poitiers (France), and Turku (Finland). Will follow round two, between the Universities of Coimbra (Portugal), Iasi (Romania), Jena (Germany), and Salamanca (Spain). The winners will battle in the final round, in 2023.
The First EC2U Science Battle features three six-member teams of researchers. Teams will be “locked” in a glass cube for three hours to resolve questions submitted by the audience. Each competition venue will have a host. There will also be judges, who will arbitrarily award teams points for wit, entertainment, reasoning, finality, and the audience will be able to give additional points according to their own preference.
Questions to researchers are compiled from suggestions received from the public. The public can follow the work of researchers from the outside or online and may also help teams and ask more questions.
Research teams are multidisciplinary, and questions can be on any topic. In the previous Science Battles, researchers have wondered, among other things: why stars and other celestial bodies like the earth are almost round; whether it is ethically better to eat insects than meat; why water pipes freeze more easily when the frost eases; why man is so selfish; how many balloons are needed to lift an 80 kg person into the air.
