(English below)

Appeal of the Rectors of the Universities of Lombardy (March 9, 2020)

As never before, this is time to demonstrate that the whole country is fully understanding the severity of the Covid-19 infection and relies on the advices of experts.

As Rectors of the Lombard universities we feel deeply touched by what is happening and we immediately satisfied the requests of the national and regional authorities by suspending the face-to-face classes and activities and by implementing, with a great personal and technical commitment of many people, e-lessons. This allows and will allow our students to continue their learning path and their studies.

Our universities, usually a place of aggregation and intense scientific and cultural exchanges, are sadly empty during these days, but we believe that social containment is the single and most effective obstacle to the spread of the virus.

However, Italy cannot stand for long if each citizen does not do its part by following the most important principle of social containment, i.e. staying as much as possible at home and reducing external activities as much as possible. Till now, we have been chasing and chasing the virus and all this has led to fill our hospitals and their intensive care areas, reaching levels never seen before. It is a pleasure to read the manifestations of closeness and esteem to the medical and nursing staff of our hospitals, but everyone must understand that if we do not get the growth curve slowing down with a wise behaviour, all their efforts will be in vain.

We call for all citizens and all residents of Italy, regardless of the region of residence, to follow the indications contained in the latest Decree of the Government and abiding its provisions in the most scrupulous possible way.

Nobody shall feel far or (even worse) immune from this serious epidemic that we will be able to face and win only with a common effort, firstly by trusting experts, then by understanding and acting wisely.
