(English below) Il 25 e 26 maggio si è tenuto in modalità virtuale il kick-off meeting del progetto eXplainable Artificial Intelligence in healthcare Management (xAIM) che è stato finanziato dalla Comunità Europea per circa 1,7 milioni di Euro. Gli obiettivi del progetto possono essere riassunti nei seguenti: istituire un programma di master specifico dedicato all’uso dell’IA spiegabile in ambito sanitario, al fine di promuovere lo sviluppo di professionisti altamente qualificati per affrontare la mancanza di competenze digitali altamente specializzate in ambito IA; e sviluppare una rete di programmi simili a livello europeo, per avviare progressivamente un master congiunto in “Gestione Digitale della Sanità”.
La riunione di avvio del progetto si è svolta in due sessioni in cui esperti di gestione sanitaria e di intelligenza artificiale (IA) si sono confrontati su questi temi con il consorzio di università partner del progetto sull’applicazione dell’IA ‘spiegabile’ al fine di individuare temi rilevanti per la progettazione e l’erogazione del master. Per gli aspetti di gestione sanitaria sono intervenuti il dottor Michele Tringali, del Ministero della Salute italiano, e la dottoressa Line Farah, coordinatrice del centro di innovazione nei dispositivi medici dell’ospedale Foch, in Francia. Entrambi hanno illustrato le sfide e le possibili soluzioni offerte dall’introduzione di dispositivi basati sull’IA nel contesto sanitario. Mentre il dottor Tringali ha offerto una prospettiva di sistema nella sua presentazione intitolata “Challenges for healthcare systems and AI solutions in healthcare”, la dottoressa Farah ha proposto una sintesi della possibile valutazione degli impatti dell’IA nel settore sanitario con un intervento dal titolo “Artificial intelligence based-medical devices in healthcare: where do we stand with their assessment?”.
Il secondo giorno ha visto l’IA spiegabile quale protagonista del dibattito. Il prof. Allan Tucker della Brunel University di Londra ha infatti condiviso le possibili strategie, opportunità e rischi legati all’apertura della scatola nera dell’IA in sanità con la lezione su “Opening the Black Box: The Importance of Explainable AI”.
Alla riunione di lancio del progetto hanno partecipato i partner del progetto che è coordinato dall’Università di Pavia e affiancata dalla Goethe University (D), dalla Keele University (UK), Leibniz University Hannover (D) e University of Ljubljana (SL).

Opening the black box of explainable artificial intelligence in healthcare. Start of the European project xAIM
On May 25th and 26th it took place online the kick-off meeting of the project eXplainable Artificial Intelligence in healthcare Management (xAIM), which was funded by the European Commission for a total amount of about 1,7 million euro. The main objectives of the project can be summarized as follows: to create a new master program specifically dedicated to the use of explainable AI in healthcare, in order to promote the development of highly specialized professionals with regard to AI, and to create a network of similar programs at the European level, in order to joint master’s degree in “digital healthcare management”.
The kick-off meeting was organized in two sessions where several experts from the fields of healthcare management and artificial intelligence (AI) discussed these topics with the consortium of the xAIM project’s partner universities, with the aim of identifying the relevant issues for the master’s design and implementation.
With regard to the healthcare management topics, doctor Michele Tringali, from the Italian Ministry of Health, and doctor Line Farah, Coordinator of the medical device innovation Center at Foch Hospital, France. Both illustrated challenges and possible solutions connected with the introduction of AI-based devices in the healthcare context. While, on the one hand, doctor Tringali, offered a macro perspective with his presentation entitled “Challenges for healthcare systems and AI solutions in healthcare”, doctor Farah proposed a synthesis of the possible evaluation of the impacts of AI on the healthcare sector, with a presentation entitled “Artificial intelligence based-medical devices in healthcare: where do we stand with their assessment?”.
The second day had explainable AI as the protagonist of the debate. Professor Allan Tucker from Brunel University, London, shared potential strategies, opportunities and risks linked to the opening of the AI black box in healthcare, with a lesson named “Opening the Black Box: The Importance of Explainable AI”.
The starting meeting saw the participation of the partner of the project, which is coordinated by the University of Pavia, cooperating with Goethe University (D), Keele University (UK), Leibniz University Hannover (D) and University of Ljubljana (SL).
